 Halden Kunstforening 27. januar – 11.februar

Dette todelte arbeidet var vårt bidrag til vandre- og gruppeutstillingen Reiseblikk, kuratert av Anne Szefer Karlsen. Greetings from bestod av to stedsspesifikke installasjoner tilpasset Halden og Oslo kunstforeningers lokaler og format, utført som store veggmalerier i krysningsfeltet mellom maleri og installasjon.

 Vi valgte å nærme oss reiseproblematikken ved å fokusere på charterturismen, sentrert inn på forestillinger, generaliseringer og fordommer rundt den prototypiske turist. Fokuset lå på det gjenkjennelige og universelle ved det å være vestlig turist, der alle kommer hjem med de samme suvenirene og fotografiene. Selv om sammenstillingen og bearbeidelsen av vårt innsamlede materiale var vår egen tolkning, lå interessen vår i de kollektive reiseminnene.

Klassiske bilder fra Syden dannet utgangspunktet for motivkretsen i veggmaleriene. De sto i samspill med ulike objekter som suvenirer, pyntedokker, snurrende planter, kokosnøtt-spots, voksduker, afrika-kofferter, lyslenker m.m. Disse arbeider ble også akkompagnert av Ramb-oohs spesialkomponerte soundtrack ”Palma de Mallorca”.

Det temporære arbeidet i Halden bestod blant annet av elleve meter veggmaleri, pidestaller med suvenirer som kastet falske skylines, samt fotoalbum med bilder av reiserekvisitter utplassert på ulike steder i Østfold.

I Oslo kunstforening utviklet arbeidet seg videre med et større og mer komplekst veggmaleri i flere lag. I tillegg bestod installasjonen blant annet av en skulptur av sammenteipede suvenirer omgjort til det optimale turistmonument samt stramt sammenbundne grupperinger av pyntedokker med tilhørende guider. På åpningen laget vi en scene for fotografering med et spesifikt utsnitt av utstillingen som kulisse. Her fikk publikum tatt sitt foto etter å ha valgt seg ut en rekvisitt (en ukulele, et bastskjørt, en sombrerohatt etc.). Bildene ble printet ut fortløpende, slik at man kunne ta med sitt foto som sin egen suvenir fra utstillingen.

 Traveling Glances

Halden Art Association, 27. Januar – 11. February

This duplex piece was our contribution to the Group exhibition Travelling Glances, curated by Anne Szefer Karlsen. Greetings from consisted in two location specific installations adapted to the premises and formats of Halden and Oslo Art Associations, performed as large wall paintings in the crossing point between painting and installation.

 We chose to approach the issue of traveling by focusing on charter tourism, concentrating on perceptions, generalizations and prejudices of what is the prototype tourist. The focus was upon the recognizable and universal in being a tourist from the Western World, countries in which all return home carrying the same souvenirs and the same photography’s. Even though the juxtaposing and the reworking of our collected material were personal interpretations, our main interest was in the collective traveling memories.

Classic photos from the Mediterranean countries were the starting point for the motives in the wall paintings. They were interacting with various objects, such as souvenirs, ornamental dolls, winding plants, coconut spots, oilcloths, African briefcases, light chains, etc. The pieces were also accompanied by the especially composed soundtracks by Ramb-ooh,”Palma de Mallorca”.

The temporary piece in Halden consisted in, among others, eleven meters of wall paintings, pedestals with souvenirs that cast fake skylines, and photo albums containing pictures of traveling requisites placed out on various locations in Østfold.

The work in Oslo Art Association was developed further, into a larger and more complex wall painting of several layers. Further, the installation consisted in, among others, a sculpture of souvenirs taped together, transformed into the optimal tourist monument, as well as tight groups of ornamental dolls and their belonging guides strung together. On the day of the opening, we made a scene for taking photographs, with a specific section of the exhibition as stage. This meant that the audience could take their own pictures, after selecting a requisite (a ukulele, a grass skirt, a sombrero, etc.). The pictures were instantly printed out, for the audience to be able to bring their own picture as a souvenir from the exhibition.
