Polart er et spesielt samarbeid mellom forskernettverket ARCTOS, Troms Fylkeskultursenter, Norsk Polarinstitutt og Tromsø Kunstforening. Jeg var en av de utvalgte som fikk muligheten til å delta på forskningstokt med påfølgende utstilling i Tromsø kunstforening.

 Jeg deltok på Alkekongen– toktet fra 17.- 29. juli 2010. Da forskerne og mannskapet hadde sine fastlagte arbeidsrutiner og rytmer ble det viktig for meg å lage mine egne. Jeg gikk jevnlig på foto-tokt og tok tilsammen rundt 3000 bilder i løpet av de ti dagene på havet.

Utgangspunktet for verket til utstillingen er 23 utvalgte fotoserier over horisontlinja tatt på baugen av Lance på ulike tidspunkt i løpet toktet. Fotoremsene med 360 graders avbildninger av utsikten danner utgangspunktet for maleriserien. De åtte maleriene utgjør tilsammen en sju meter lang sammenhengende linje av 23 større og mindre felt, der hvert felt representerer ett spesifikt tidspunkt.I maleri 1vil for eksempel horisontlinja fra 21.7.10 klokka 11.40 møte horisontlinja 24.7.10 klokka 8.34 som igjen møter horisontlinja 20.7.10 klokka 12.35.

Ulike tidspunkt møter hverandre i vertikale felt og henger sammen ved den gjennomgående horisontlinja. Tilsammen utgjør tidsfragmentene en komprimert reiseskildring.

Å gjøre utvalg fra stort fotografisk materiale er en viktig del i all min kunstproduksjon. Metodisk er innsamling og utvalg alltid utgangspunkt for tilblivelsen av kunstverket. Tidsaspektet, representert ved den nitidige bearbeidingen (maleriet, tegningen, collagen) i kontrast til det fotografisk arkivmateriale som ofte består av øyeblikksbilder, blir et sentralt element.

Materialet maleriene er malt på er pleksiglass. Den speilblanke overflaten som reflekterer bevegelsene i rommet, kan assosieres med opplevelsen av å være på havet.

Twenty-three horizon lines

Polart is a special collaboration between the research network ARCTOS, Troms County Cultural Center, the Norwegian Polar Institute and Tromsø Art Society. I was selected to participate in a research expedition with a subsequent exhibition at the Tromsø Art Society. 

I attended the little auk-cruise, 17 – 29 July 2010. On the cruise, where both the scientists and the crew had their regular work routines, it was important for me to create my own. I went regularly for photo expeditions and took a total of about 3000 pictures during the ten days.

The basis for the project is 23 selected photo series of the horizon line taken on the bow of Lance at different times during the ten-day long little auk-cruise in July 2010. The photo strips with 360-degree images of the view forms the basis for the painting series I show during the exhibition. The eight paintings comprise a seven-meter-long continuous line of 23 fields in different sizes, where each field represents a specific time. In the first painting for example, the horizon line from 21/7/2010 at 11.40 meets the horizon line 24/7/2010 at 8.34 which meets the horizon line 20/7/2010 at 12:35.

The different time meeting each other in vertical fields are linked together by the continuous horizon line. The fragments together make a compressed time travelogue.

Methodically the collection and selection is always the basis for my art making.The time frame, represented by the time-consuming processing (painting, drawing, collage), in contrast to the photographic archive material, which often consist of snapshots, is a key element.

 The material of the paintings is Plexiglas. The mirror-like surface that reflects the movements in the room can be associated with the experience of being at sea.
